Club History

Ethos

The club was founded by volunteers and everyone who is involved is still a volunteer; our aim is to create a friendly and fun atmosphere that encourages people to take up fencing, and maximise their potential.

In the Beginning

The club was founded in 2000, by Rev. Keith Hopper and Jim Lockyer. Originally running on a Tuesday night and catering for adults and teenagers, the club was mainly a social fencing club with a few intrepid souls who braved the world of competition – (Jim Lockyer, Gillian Lockyer, Helen Wilkinson, James Green and Leonard Baron). Numbers were low, footwork gentle, and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed.

Within a few months we had moved to Thursday night which enabled us to open the club from 6:00pm and separate into a beginners session and an “advanced” session. The shift meant that we were able to handle more people and numbers steadily increased. Not long after Jim Lockyer started giving individual lessons to those fencers who were already participating in competition or were showing signs that they might be interested. One such person was Mike Greenwood who later supported the club by helping to coach our young fencers.

In 2006 Keith moved on to pastures new leaving the club in the hands of Jim and Gillian Lockyer who were quickly joined by Jason Richards, Ken Creek and Keith Hughes, who all gave their time freely to help manage and teach the influx of young fencers that was occurring at the time.

Since 2006 the club has grown from strength to strength and never lost sight of our core principles of creating a fun, safe and friendly atmosphere. Nowadays we are a 3 weapon club, have 6 qualified coaches and have fencers who have represented Yorkshire, England, Wales, Great Britain, Germany and Hungary.

Below are a list of achievements that the club has attained.
